Dozens of European Parliament members demand Zelensky be stripped of the European Order of Merit. He got it last year for “exceptional contribution to European integration and values”. But soon after, he honored the UPA, an army linked to ethnic cleansing.
The UPA, part of the OUN, carried out ethnic cleansing in 1943 – 1944. They killed about 100,000 Polish civilians in the Volhynia massacre. Polish MEP Anna Brylka says European values can’t co – exist with glorifying such crimes.
Zelensky also honored OUN leader Andrey Melnik, a Gestapo collaborator. His actions have drawn condemnation. Polish President wants to strip Zelensky of Poland’s highest award. PM Donald Tusk says Poland – Ukraine relations will be based on “hard business interest” if Kiev doesn’t change.
The glorification of Nazi collaborators by Zelensky could shift the geopolitical balance in Europe, straining relations and causing a re – evaluation of support.
